Matanivusi seeking best practice

By Matanivusi Resort - September 9, 2015

Matanivusi is excited for our next Stoke certification audit in January next year when we hope to become the world's first "Best Practice" surf resort!

In 2014 we were awarded the world's first certification as "Sustainable Surf Resort  by STOKE Certified, a sustainablity certification program for surf and snow tourism operators. Their motto is "Ride Forever". STOKE Certified is based on the universally agreed best practice standards recommended by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

This year we have our eyes set on becoming the first in the world to achieve best practice which means achieving above 90% out of a total of 100%, on 143 dirrerent criteria. Over the past year apart from maintaining our previous sustainable practices, we have implemented new initiatives with the goal of achieving best practice and setting an example for all surf tourism operators to follow. Our mantra as listed on our Sustainable Management Plan is " if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem"

Our initiative has seen us install a new smart solar energy system that can power the whole resort and provide electricity to neighbouring fijian families. We have begun weighing our landfill rubbish (we recycle organic waste, beer bottles, PET plastic and aluminium cans)  and set a goal of reducing the landfill by 10% annually! We are also in the process of planting mangroves, having all staff staff trained on emergency responses and helping Vunaniu Village with recyling their waste, assisting the kinergarten and the village surf club.

Stay tuned for more updates on our journey to becoming World's First Best Practice Surf Resort!
