Kava: The Magical Elixir of Fiji

Kava, a cherished elixir of the South Pacific, holds a special place in the heart of Fiji's rich cultural tapestry. Derived from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, Kava has been an integral part of Fijian traditions for centuries. Renowned for its soothing properties, Kava is not just a beverage but a symbol of community, relaxation, and spiritual connection. In this blog, we delve into the enchanting world of Kava, exploring its historical roots, cultural significance, and modern-day applications. Join us as we uncover the mystique of Kava, its role in Fiji's vibrant rituals, and its potential to enhance well-being. Whether you're a curious traveler seeking a taste of local culture or an enthusiast eager to explore the therapeutic benefits of this magical elixir, this journey into the world of Kava promises to be an enlightening and enriching experience.

The History of Kava

Kava's history is deeply rooted in the South Pacific, where it has been cultivated and cherished for millennia. Originating in the islands of Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, Kava holds a significant place in the cultural and social fabric of indigenous communities. With its calming and euphoric effects, Kava was traditionally used in ceremonies, rituals, and social gatherings to foster a sense of unity, relaxation, and spiritual connection.

The arrival of Kava in Fiji marked a transformative moment in the islands' cultural landscape. Embraced by Fijian chiefs and communities alike, Kava quickly became an integral part of traditional ceremonies, such as weddings, births, and diplomatic negotiations. Its consumption was considered a sacred ritual, symbolizing hospitality, friendship, and communal bonding.

Throughout history, elaborate rituals and protocols surrounded the preparation and consumption of Kava in Fiji. Chiefs and elders presided over Kava ceremonies, ensuring proper etiquette and adherence to cultural norms. These rituals served not only to honor the spiritual significance of Kava but also to reinforce social cohesion and hierarchy within Fijian society. Today, the legacy of Kava continues to thrive, offering a glimpse into Fiji's rich cultural heritage and providing a bridge between tradition and modernity.

The Science Behind Kava

Kava's scientific profile reveals a complex interplay of compounds that contribute to its unique effects on the body and mind. The plant contains active ingredients called kavalactones, which exert their influence on neurotransmitter activity in the brain, particularly affecting gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. This interaction results in a range of physiological and psychological effects, including relaxation, stress reduction, and mood elevation.

Research into Kava has uncovered a variety of potential benefits, including its ability to alleviate anxiety, promote sleep, and reduce symptoms of stress-related disorders. However, concerns about potential risks, such as liver toxicity, have also been raised, prompting caution in its use and cultivation. Despite ongoing debates surrounding its safety and efficacy, Kava continues to be valued for its therapeutic potential and cultural significance in Fiji and beyond. Understanding the science behind Kava is crucial for informed decision-making regarding its consumption and integration into wellness practices.

Kava in Fiji Today

In contemporary Fiji, Kava remains deeply embedded in the cultural fabric, serving as a symbol of hospitality, friendship, and social cohesion. The tradition of Kava ceremonies continues to thrive, with gatherings ranging from intimate family gatherings to grand community events. It is not uncommon to find Kava being prepared and shared in villages, homes, and even workplaces across the islands.

Modern Fiji also sees Kava integrated into various social settings, including resorts and tourist destinations like Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort. Here, guests have the opportunity to partake in authentic Kava ceremonies, immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the islands. These ceremonies often involve rituals passed down through generations, fostering a sense of connection to Fiji's traditions and fostering a spirit of camaraderie among participants.

As a premier surf and yoga retreat destination in Fiji, Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort offers visitors a chance to experience the warmth and hospitality of Fijian culture through Kava ceremonies, providing a unique and memorable glimpse into the island's vibrant traditions.

Kava Preparation and Consumption

Kava preparation and consumption in Fiji blend tradition with modernity, offering a diverse range of methods and techniques. Traditionally, Kava is prepared by grinding the root of the Kava plant into a powder, which is then mixed with water in a large communal bowl known as a "tanoa." The mixture is then strained through a cloth to produce a cloudy, earthy-tasting beverage.

In modern times, various innovations have emerged in Kava preparation, including the use of pre-packaged instant Kava mixes and Kava capsules for convenient consumption. However, traditional methods remain prevalent, especially during cultural ceremonies and gatherings.

Dosage and safety considerations are essential when consuming Kava, as excessive consumption can lead to adverse effects. It is recommended to consume Kava in moderation and to be mindful of individual tolerance levels. Additionally, pregnant or breastfeeding women and individuals with liver conditions are advised to avoid Kava consumption due to potential risks.

Experiencing Kava: What to Expect

Experiencing Kava is a unique journey that encompasses various sensory elements and physiological effects. The taste profile of Kava is earthy and slightly bitter, with a numbing sensation on the tongue. As you sip the beverage, you may notice a distinct mouthfeel, reminiscent of the cultural heritage behind this revered drink.

The immediate effects of Kava typically include a sense of relaxation and tranquility, accompanied by mild euphoria and a feeling of social bonding. These effects can last for a few hours, depending on the individual's tolerance and the potency of the Kava consumed.

For first-time drinkers, it's essential to start with a small serving to gauge your body's reaction to Kava. Additionally, it's advisable to consume Kava in a safe and comfortable environment, surrounded by trusted companions. Embracing the cultural traditions and rituals associated with Kava can enhance the overall experience, allowing you to fully appreciate its significance in Fijian culture.

Kava Culture and Etiquette

Fiji, Kava culture is deeply rooted in tradition and carries significant cultural significance. When participating in Kava ceremonies, it's essential to observe respectful behavior and adhere to cultural etiquette. This includes showing reverence to the Kava and the person serving it, as well as following established rituals and customs.

Understanding cultural norms surrounding Kava consumption is crucial for visitors to Fiji. This involves familiarizing oneself with traditional practices and demonstrating appreciation for the ritualistic aspects of Kava drinking. Engaging with locals and participating in Kava ceremonies can provide enriching cultural experiences, fostering connections and a deeper understanding of Fijian heritage.

By embracing Kava culture with respect and humility, visitors can contribute positively to the preservation and celebration of this cherished tradition, while also fostering meaningful interactions with the local community.

Surf Resorts and Kava Experiences

Surf resorts in Fiji offer more than just exhilarating waves; they provide a gateway to authentic Fijian culture, including Kava experiences. At Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort and other surf destinations, Kava ceremonies are often integrated into resort activities, offering guests a chance to unwind and connect with fellow surf enthusiasts.

These ceremonies provide moments of relaxation and camaraderie, where surfers and travelers gather to share stories and forge new friendships over a bowl of Kava. Many guests at Matanivusi and similar resorts have shared personal anecdotes and testimonials about the profound sense of community and belonging they experienced during these Kava sessions.

By incorporating Kava experiences into their offerings, surf resorts in Fiji not only provide memorable cultural experiences but also deepen the sense of connection and camaraderie among guests. Whether unwinding after a day on the waves or simply soaking in the serene ambiance of the resort, Kava ceremonies offer a unique and enriching aspect of the surf resort experience in Fiji.

Kava Myths and Misconceptions

Despite its cultural significance and therapeutic properties, Kava is often shrouded in myths and misconceptions. Addressing these, it's essential to dispel notions about safety and legality surrounding Kava consumption. Contrary to misconceptions, when consumed responsibly, Kava is generally considered safe, with minimal side effects. Additionally, educating readers on the traditional and responsible ways of preparing and consuming Kava fosters a deeper understanding of its cultural importance. By debunking myths and providing accurate information, individuals can approach Kava consumption with confidence, recognizing its potential benefits and respecting its cultural significance.

Come Experience Kava!

Kava stands as more than just a beverage—it embodies the rich cultural heritage and offers various health benefits.
Initiators of Change

Earlier this year, Matanivusi was named amongst the elite of the surf and skate industry companies that are leading the charge in sustainability. Transworld Business included Matanivusi in their article "Initiators of Change: Six Companies Driving Sustainability". We were excited and honored to be recognized amongst such respected and innovative companies. These companies include Vissla, Patagonia, Firewire, Volcom and Buero Skateboards.

We were also interviewed for a separate article in Transworld Business " Matanivusi | Fiji's Sustainable Surf Resort on Becoming STOKE Certified". You can check that article out by following this link to the article.

Since the creation of our resort, Matanivusi, we have been single-minded about incorporating sustainability in all our practices and operations. We designed the resort with the philosophy of "if you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem". We built, using plantation timbers, around trees and in a way that maintained the natural beauty of the area with raised platforms connect buildings, thereby minimising our footpriints. All buildings incorporate passive solar design concepts that negates the need for energy hungry air conditioning. We use a Biolytix waste water treatment system that uses no chemicals and minimal energy. Composting worms (red tigers) break down solids into useable compost and liquids seep through filtration layers and are finally pumped out into drip irrigation watering the gardens. We collect all the water from our roofs and store this is tanks around the resort for use in the rooms and restaurant. We have installed a solar system with battery back up that has reduced our use of a generator to 3-4 hours per day compared to 24/7. Basically we are in a remote location, but only 10 minutes off the main highway, with no grid services available so we had to set the resort up and incorporate all our own infrastructure services as sustainably as we could.

In 2014, we were the world's first surf resort to be certified by STOKE Certified. After our first audit of 142 criteria as developed by STOKE, we were certified as "Sustainable" with a score of 84% out of 100. STOKE bases their sustainability criteria on universally agreed best practice standards represented by the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) and then tailors the criteria to the unique context of the surf and snow industries. STOKE Certified is a non-profit organization.

In 2016, we were again audited. This is a prerequisite for maintaining STOKE certification. It is mandatory to have an audit every two years. Between the first and second audit, our major sustainable initiative was the installation of our solar power system. This system cut our emissions by 69%. On our most recent audit earlier this year, we received a compliance score of 86%. This recertified our score as "Sustainable" again. .

Our goal going forward is to work toward becoming the world's first surf resort to reach STOKE's highest level of certification, "Best Practices". Wouldnt that be a great award to have... "Matanivusi...the world's first "Best Practice" surf resort" and get more regognition as a leader and initiator in sustainability. In order to meet our goal. We are constantly devising strategies that increase our commitment to sustainability. Over the last two months, we have had an intern from San Diego State University come and help devise action plans to be implemented before the next audit. Some of the plans include:

Conversion of all lighting to LED
Liaison with the village to adopt sustainable practices
Establishment of surf club for the local youth
	Conservation of water
	Reduction of landfill waste
	Staff training programs in sustainability

If you would like to find out more then you can check out our Sustainable Management Plan.

Fiji Pro 2016

Congratulations on another epic Fiji Pro! For a while it looked like the finalist might have had a chance to match Owen Wright's performance of 2015 with the perfect score of 2 x 10 point rides. The conditions looked similar with the big wash throughs appearing on the outside ledge but it just didnt quite produce the same result when they hit the inside reef. Still the surfing was fantastic and Medina was a clear winner.

Have you ever wondered where we would be without surf forecasters? If not for those people we wouldn't be seeing the world's best surfers do their job in the best possible conditions. They certainly got the call right with the decision to run the lay days after the pumping surf of the opening rounds of the event. It must be nerve racking watching the charts and monitoring the meterological data of weather events in the great southern ocean below Australia and telling the event commissioner to hold off - the swell is coming!

Not Cloudbreak... It's Frigates

At Matanivusi we use the forecast sites and they are great at telling when the swell is coming up and dropping off. The accuracy of the swell direction and wind direction forecasts are not always spot on for us, so the best thing we do for all our guests is to get in the boat and go out to the breaks and check it. Even when the forecast and the actual ocean conditions seem hopeless, we still encourage guests to go out and have a look. What I consider as hopeless surf, after 20 years living and surfing in this area,is usually better than most guests get at their homebreak. No, not becasue shitty surf in Fiji is any better than shitty surf anywhere else in the world, but because the water is warm and crystal clear, there is no crowd problem and you get a feel for the place ready for when it does turn on.

Now the event is over for another year, the world of surfing will focus its attention on the perfect peeling rights of Jeffries Bay. Fiji's "15 minutes of fame" is over but stay tuned for the next few days as I'm sure the forecast swell for Cloudbreak on Sunday will grab the world's attention again if the big wave chargers show up. Slater indicated in his post heat interview that he is sticking around. The forecast is for 3-4 meter swell with an occassional 6 meter. Lets wait and see if the actual conditions live up to the forecast!'i

Frigates

Of course everybody around the globe was watching "the Cloudbreak swell". Little do a lot of people realize that Frigates holds just as big... if you want it! Of course we don't get the big wave chargers here so we don't go out. We surf around the corner, up the reef on the inside in fun head high + waves away from the limelight, just doing our thing... getting our guests into some of the best waves of their lives. May was a month of madness with unbelievable conditions. The best for the 20 years I have been living and surfing here. Swell after swell with solid waves in between. Very light offshore easterly breezes and sunny hot days. Still need the rashie to save your body. El Nino or whatever, it was a memorable month where we surfed at Frigates nearly every single day except when it was too big. Thousands of pics and thousands of memories of May 2016, the best ever!

Fiji Pro - World Surf League

The Fiji Pro is over and what an historic event with Owen Wright out surfing Julian Wilson in spectacular waves at Cloudbreak. Not perfect waves by any means but very solid and contestable. If you watched it you would have seen the strong winds with the chop on the ocean outside and the waves getting cleaner as they hit the inside reef and reeled off down the line. There were a lot of waves that either closed out or were just fat but it was amazing to see the world's best here in Fiji making it look so easy. How was that first 10 of Owen's when he took off on the roll through? You couldnt even see him in the mountain of whitewater until he got to his feet at the bottom of the wave. If you're a surfer you know how difficult that move was.
